Hi, I'm Emily

I am passionate about turning ideas into impact.  For the last two decades, I have had the privilege of working with some of the world’s leading thinkers and doers—including two Nobel-Prize winning authors, National Book Award winners, MacArthur “genius” Award winners, Pulitzer-Prize shortlisted authors, Whiting Award Grant Winners, Freedom Scholars, and countless New York Times bestselling authors on shaping the public conversation. I've also worked with clients beyond the publishing world--organizations with missions I am passionate about-- on their brand strategy as a publicist and/or publicity consultant.

I began my career at Random House (Crown Publishing Group), where I cut my teeth working on a variety of genres—from lifestyle and celebrity memoir to fiction and politics.  Years later, I found a home at PublicAffairs (now an imprint of The Hachette Book Group), where I found my calling working with authors of nonfiction—specializing in politics, economics, human rights, science, business, philosophy, climate issues, and psychology.  I found—and still find—it deeply meaningful to service big ideas, unconventional thinking, activism, and scholarship that has the power to change the world around us.  At PublicAffairs I also worked as an acquisition and developmental editor.  Nearly a decade ago, I founded Emily Lavelle Communications, a boutique full-service pr firm, where I continue to work with clients--authors, publishers, and organizations I'm passionate about--on growing their brands, increasing visibility, launching important initiatives and books, and building relationships with the media.

I also serve as President of the Board of Directors for The Cabin, A Center for Readers and Writers. In my spare time, I can be found at the peephole of my telescope, hiking with my rescue dog, Redford, and riding horses around the American West.

I FIND IT DEEPLY MEANINGFUL TO SERVICE BIG IDEAS, UNCONVENTIONAL THINKING, ACTIVISM, AND SCHOLARSHIP THAT HAS THE POWER TO CHANGE THE WORLD AROUND US.

What I do...

I offer full-service and a-la-carte publicity, editorial, project management, and brand consultation.  My approach includes creative, collaborative strategizing to identify top media targets and campaign goals; original, detailed, authentic messaging and press material creation; bespoke pitching tailored to my media contact’s beats and needs; a holistic approach that integrates publicity and my clients' brand awareness across legacy media and new-media digital platforms.

I work best when I can create warm, collaborative relationships with my clients and their teams—and can promise you won’t just be a project on the conveyer belt. I am present, creative, and I devote my best, most original ideas to each project—integrating my passion for the ideas you're presenting, the news cycle, world events, and my trusted relationships with journalists into each campaign.

FULL-SERVICE PR CAMPAIGNS

I'm available for soup-to-nuts publicity campaigns, from initial messaging calls with clients to final media hits.  I work with teams to set initial strategy/vision, create detailed messaging documents, write extensive press materials, create bespoke pitches, edit original bylined opeds and essays, pitch to major national and regional outlets, including podcasts, legacy print and broadcast media, and online outlets, prepare authors for interviews, and plan national media launches.

I plan and execute national speaking and  tours; venues include bookstores, think tanks, universities, conferences, festivals, town-hall forums, and more.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT

My goal as your Project Manager is to ease the overwhelm of heading into a book campaign, set a strategy according to your goals, and execute that strategy, so that you can focus on YOUR area of expertise.

As your project manager, I will parlay almost twenty years of experience in the changing publishing landscape into a successful book launch strategy; I will go above and beyond what in-house agents, editors, marketing and publicity teams can offer.

I will be your right-hand woman, your eyes, ears, and brain to be sure all facets of the campaign are on track--from having the right team in place to events, bulk orders, website audits and updates, organizing and rallying your network and contacts with the right asks at the right time, and much more.

IN-HOUSE SUPPORT

I regularly work with publishers and pr firms to help cover short- and long-term parental leaves and sabbaticals. I also am available to step in for short-term staff support on specific projects, for specialty pitching, media training, press material creation, and media list generation.

ONGOING/ RETAINER SUPPORT

I offer retainer services for clients looking for ongoing publicity support, but without a book launch or major event to promote. In this capacity, we work together on navigating and planning incoming media and speaking requests, a short- and long-term strategy and goals, and I continue to build media relationships and identify media opportunities for you according to that strategy.  We also utilize the news cycle and are prepared to pitch you for print, broadcast, and podcast interviews as news in your area of expertise breaks.

À-LA-CARTE SERVICES

Don't require a full service pr campaign? I often partner with publishers and authors on a-la-carte services, including:

  • press material creation

  • media list generation

  • specialty pitching

  • oped editing and placement

  • tour / event support

  • media training

  • basic author website creation

  • ...and much more

“I don’t know how I got so lucky as to have Emily Lavelle as my publicist.  Not only did she have the most powerful connections, but she also had a deep knowledge and respect for the content of my book.  Because of it, she was able to deliver so many remarkable opportunities for me.  She is the real deal and then some!”
